I wasn't sure that we were all over the Diarrhea to the extent that we could handle a long drive. I asked Julie how long would it take. When she said, "Oh, about an hour or so..." I figured it was a good risk. So, we left for another adventure......
We drove down the little mountain road from Chuys house, thru Pie de la Cuesta.... past coconut tree groves, thru Military checkpoints, past more coconut groves.... and into what seemed to be the 'jungle territory surrounding Acapulco in the Northerly direction.
It was a very scenic drive..... small country type roads, sparse traffic, and dense jungle type vegetation all around.
I kept thinking..... it must be soon! Anytime now... Julie said only about one hour......
Well, one hour or so, turned into over six hours ....and a sunset later. After much of the drive being on fairly level ground, the road began to climb higher in elevation and finally became a coast hugging twisty drive.... which afforded us glimpses of the Ocean and beautiful craggy cliffs dropping straight into the surf below. Well after Sunset, we finally arrived in the little town of IXTAPA. We headed straight to the Hotel area in hopes of getting a room and then do a bit of exploring.....
The first hotel quoted us over $1,000.00 US dollars a night! We did a slight cough, and as politely as possible, bowed out of that one. On and on we drove, until someone suggested we back track to the last little town; ZIHUATANEJO and try to find lodgings there.
We did backtrack, and after much searching, found a small affordable hotel, right downtown and actually in view of the Mexican Naval base that is in the town.
We walked around a bit, had a dinner, and went to sleep. We never imagined how crowded the town would be...but, we should have known, as close to the holidays as it was and all.
It was a great time for us all.... but, I suggest unless you have found a fantastic deal with one of the hotels in IXTAPA, you should go for the small fishing village nearby. Much more affordable, and less touristy.
