MEXICO #5 Waking up in TAXCO!

After we left the Cave, we drove and drove around a little mountain road. It wound around a little mountain ridge, and took a few hours to finally arrive at TAXCO..pronounced (TAS-CO). It was a little eerie driving in the dark, on such a windy and non-light country road, but Julie took it slow and cautious, and we finally arrived. We spotted an excellant Hotel named LOMA LINDA. I highly recommend this place, if ever you find yourself in Taxco. It is built on the side of the mountain that holds Taxco in place, and the view of the mountains is fantastic! Its right close to all the Silver vendors that have their little plaza down below ..... and it is clean and only 70.00 for the three of us! Hot showers, two large beds, and TV! WOW! We awoke to a view off the balcony of the mountain range we had crossed the night before...and we kinda felt whoozy, realizing how high up we were! Taxco seems to be built literally on the side of a mountain! I dont know how they do it>?

This is the little plaze below our bedroom.... very pretty with the early morning sunshine hitting the mural of the Aztecan scene.

This is our Hotel....the LOMA LINDA

More view of the Hotel.. You park your car up above on the flat parking part, and walk down to your room, which overhangs the mountain, and is kinda eerie. It made me dizzy to look off the balcony.
Here is Chuy, standing at the top of one of the little side streets that is VERY steep. They take you to the shopping plaza below where the famous TAXCO 925. Silver is sold. Of course that was our destination for the day. You can get silver at very cheap prices. I bought a ring for 11.00 (US) and saw the same ring later at the airport for 66.00 (US)......(but, then again, that is airport prices!)
Julie on the side of the street... I dont know why?
Various scenes on the road that we were walking on to get to the plaze where the silver was sold. I guess this is the locals tire shop. You dont see any poverty in TAXCO. I guess everyone there is pretty well off, considering they are all silver smiths, and their silver exports all over the world.
We started getting hungry for breakfast. We found the handy old standby. Freshly and cleanly made tortillas. We had tortillas, meat, avacadoes, and beans. A lot of energy in that food, that keeps you going all day long!

We finally made it to the Silver Vendors stands. We went kinda crazy with all the choices, and dirt cheap prices for .925 silver. This little Indian was very shy, and we had to sneak this picture. She really didnt want us to take the photo.....

A little silver stand...
Goofing around at a little alcove we found, with these paintings in it. It must be used for theater sometimes....? WE dont know?

The Vendor stands.... under the blue tarps to keep the sun out....very bright, and starting to get HOT!
More walking around....!

Being goofy...............
View of the city that is literally built on the mountainside. They are crazy! It feels wierd walking around there, like your always kinda off balance! And then the inevitable, one in every town, Catholic Church..or Cathedral. Take your pic. They are so ornate, and pretty, but....................... Chuy steers clear. He just imagines how many Indians must have worked on these buildings for free, as their Silver and Gold was plundered for Spain...... and other conquering countries over the centuries. (Good thing I am not Catholic) eeeeeeek!

Admiring the varied and colored stone work. They are very creative with stones, pebbles, etc. Amazing!!
Here is how they actually build these buildings. NO OSCHA....NO UNIONS...... NO ties offs..... NO safety hats.....on and on...... it all looks like a tragedy waiting to happen if you ask me! IT made me dizzy just to look over the guardrail at these workers...I cannot imagine how they actually work there, and dont fall or get hurt!
Well, we had enough of TAXCO.....so, it was time to hit the Hyway again, and try to make it past IGULA, and on to CHILPINCINGO. On to the Quota Hyway, and off the little dangerous mountain curvy roads.
GPS ON......... IPOD tuned in........ and off we left for further South/West...... getting anxious for Acapulco.... soon!
